PE and Games
Physical Education is a real strength at Norton sub Hamdon Primary. The school has very successful school teams which compete against other primary schools. There are many opportunities for pupils to enter area and district sporting competitions, for example in cross country running, football, netball, rugby and swimming.
In the early years, P.E. concentrates on the basic skills; catching, throwing, rolling, aiming, hitting, physical agility etc. which are then are developed as children get older.
The junior pupils have opportunities to play a variety of sports and games both within the curriculum and as extra-curricular activities. These include football, cricket, rugby, hockey, rounders, netball, athletics and cross-country running.
The children from Years 3 to 6 of the school attend Goldenstones Swimming Pool on a regular weekly basis throughout the first two terms of the school year. Over the years this facility has proved to be of great benefit to all children taking part. Children are normally expected to swim unless they present a note from their parents requesting otherwise. The good behaviour expected of a child whilst at school will also be expected of them whilst taking part in this activity.
The whole school takes part in Sports Day in the summer term, in which the children are organised into four teams, and they really enjoy the cameraderie and competitiveness of the day. Many parents take advantage of the opportunity to attend (and sometimes take part!), and this contributes to a much anticipated and enjoyable summer afternoon (weather permitting of course!).
As in all activities, we encourage the children to do their best. The school enters teams in local competitions and tries to encourage a spirit of healthy competitiveness, enjoying 'taking part' and celebrating success of all. We occasionally use specialist coaches. The school is affiliated to the Yeovil & District Primary Schools Games & Sports Association.
